Remember when?
I was just browsing one of the best sites on the web--ESPN. The main page is dedicated to remembering what Cal Ripken did TEN YEARS ago today. Has it been 10 YEARS??? Good gravy! I remember sitting in my living room watching that game with Dad. What a magical moment in sports history!
In a day and age of the pampered, overpaid, pansy major leaguer, old school men like Cal Ripken are to be that much more appreciated. My grandfather (AKA Gramps) passed away over 3 years ago. He played Triple A ball for the Cubs, and loved the game enough to play for dang near nothing. All of those guys did. Unfortunately, he got hurt and didn't make it to the majors. After he died, his town's local newspaper printed a front-page story entitled "Field of Dreams" in honor of his life.
I am currently looking at a team photo of Gramps' Triple A team running onto the field without a worry. He was 20 years young the day this picture was taken. It is black and white, and it is fading. I keep it on my desk so that I will see it on a daily basis, a reminder of how fleeting this life is.
Baseball is nowhere near what it used to be. Sure, there are glimmers of purity out there. I love guys like Jason Varitek, John Smoltz, Jim Thome, Craig Biggio, John Kruk, etc.. I love those guys that don't give a crap what they look like. They get down and dirty. Santana, the stud pitcher from the Twins, supposedly turned down a great deal of money to stay in Minnesota because he loved the fans. Stories like that still keep me around the game.
I was blessed to have gotten the opportunity to go to Cooperstown with Dad, Gramps, and Grandaddy the year before Gramps died. Walking through those halls and seeing all of those pictures created such a surreal feeling. Those guys were larger than life. I'd give almost anything to go back and see a game played purely out of love for it.
Here's to the Cal Ripkens who will never get noticed! I love watching the Triple A team play here in Louisville, partly out of sentiment, but mostly because it is as close to being as pure as the game once was as I can find today.
Does anybody else out there love pure sport--dirt, grime, sweat, tears, blood, grass fields, blisters, the smell of hot dogs, peanuts, cracker jacks, autographs, heroes, the hit-and-run, plate collisions, diving catches, walk-off dingers, old scoreboards, steel spikes, dugout chants, rally caps, day games, dust, dirty uniforms, playing in the rain, box scores, newspapers, the smell of the glove, the squeeking of shoes on the court, the smell of popcorn in old high school gymns, cheerleading cheers, whistles, charges taken, blocked shots, the smell of a waxed court, the cutting down of the nets, end zone celebrations, etc, etc, etc..... ??
What are some of your favorite sports memories??
We miss you Cal!

I grew up on the Bash Brothers - Jose Canseco and Mark McGuire - Thumpin' elbows and forearms after a homerun!
I was too young to realize how much they abused steriods. I thought all those 500 foot homeruns came from genetics!
haha...It makes what Hank Aaron did look that much more amazing.
Ok, so I don't like baseball. I think it is boring. People standing around or sitting in the dugout. It seems like batting practice with a lot of people chasing the balls.
Soccer is the best sport alive. Soccer is the worlds most popular sport. It is the national sport of most European and Latin-American countries, and of many other nations. Millions of people in more than 140 countries play soccer. The World Cup is held every four years. Soccer is one of the most famous international sport. Soccer is known world wide and is played in the Olympics.
Del, looks like you have the beginnings of a solid blog entry here. Ya just had to go and bash what used to be America's favorite past time...Entitled to your opinion...However, if you talked like that at one of my family gatherings, you'd be stoned! :)
I have always been intrigued by soccer, more so after I spent 2 months in Argentina. It is definitely the most popular sport, world-wide. I want to play with you and the international students sometime soon.
Yes! Can I be the first girl to comment on this sporty post? Sweet! OK, so I'm not so athletic. But I have to add that I was a HUGE Rockies fan during their first couple of seasons (I definitely still have a commemorative pennant from their inaugural season), and wholeheartedly believe that it's not a complete summer without baseball. Come on! And what about those bozos who eat, like, salad at baseball games? Get with the program. Hot dog! Peanuts! Popcorn! Hugest Coke ever!
And, I can't say I understand all the subtleties of baseball, but I know there's something about the roar of the crowd and the crack of the bat. And mom, and apple pie. I suddenly feel patriotic. Awesome.
DALLAS COWBOYS, all the way! I was raised a Cowboys fan. However, I am now entering into the world of college football. Go Georgia Tech!! (JD would proud!)
Right On! Clemson football rocks! One upset down and many more to come. This week we play Maryland and will then be 2 and 0. On a sad note, my alma mater The Citadel plays at Florida State. I am going to make Sunday a day of mourning after they get slaughtered.
That's what I was going to say - I so enjoy college sports more than professional - so much more passion in the fans - see, we've already got something going here...
However, no one in my family went to a college with a good football team...so our family rooted for the Miami Dolphins..I LOVE football...
So this comment is really concerning your post about Moving Mountains but I decided to comment up here so as not to blend in with all of the junk comments. Gross that that can even happen.
Anyways, I just wanted to say AMEN. It's encouraging to read about your heart to just be totally obedient to God apart from comfort or from familiar faces going the same way. It's hard. I pretty much still stink and following God alone. I want that kind of faith though. More than anything. I'm starting to wonder why I'm in school. My heart is anywhere but here. And yet, every day I get up and go sit in a classroom where i learn all about how to be a good american and all the while I'm thinking, I don't need to know how to be a good american over seas.
But i suppose....ok, i know there are things I am learning about following God while i'm here. Waiting can be just as hard as going sometimes.
Hey everyone this isn't a blog so that all of you can "post your little, favorite and most-insignificant team!!!" I am sick of all you people who think "YOUR TEAM" is the best. How selfish and short- sighted of you. Well I've got news for you.. It's NOT!
MICHIGAN FOOTBALL Is! Further, it is the only team pro or college that rocks the house on every level and is worthy of a post on this blog. Well now that, that's been said. I will return to my work. I hope all of that is cleared up now.
Everyone - be patient with Jonathan. Keep praying for him. He'll eventually come around and see that Michigan its not what he has cracked it up to be. :)
Mmmmm...yes...Michigan Football. Fortunately for me, I can say I'm a huuuuge Irish fan, and that win today...*grin*.
Texas Aggies. WHOOP!
ok so honestly i do't really follow sports much....i'd much rather play than watch. But I do like watching baseball games.
Russ- I think it's time to enlighten us with a new post... or three-point sermon. :p
PS: I would be disowned by my dad if I didn't make some shoutout on his behalf: "Go Big Blue!" Of course, he would probably follow it with a random, "I love Rush Limbaugh!" Eh, well you gotta love those dads with their senses of humor. :)
